Post-election Protest: Fawehinmi Berates Buhari -source: Nigerian Thisday newspaper

Mohammed Fawehinmi
The son of the late fiery activist and lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Mohammed Fawehinmi, has attributed the post-presidential election violent protests in the north which claimed lives and  properties worth millions of Naira to  Muhammadu Buhari's alleged inciting statement urging his supporters to "take what belongs to them by force."
Fawehinmi in a statement Friday said the statement credited to Buhari was allegedly responsible for some people taking up arms against innocent citizens perceived to be working against their interest. He declared that in any contest, there is bound to be a loser and a winner.
The head of Fawehinmi law Chambers who described Buhari’s attitude as purely military and condemnable in a democratic setting said: "It is necessary to remind Buhari that his speech after he had lost the election has caused disunity, disarray, disorganisation and incessant deaths among innocent citizens residing temporarily or permanently in the northern part of Nigeria.
"Your character as an elder statesman has been tainted by your advice to your supporters to take what belong to them by force."
He questioned the country’s former military head of state's integrity and love for his country despite  the support and followership he enjoyed during his campaign saying "where lies your willingness to protect, provide for and preserve the integrity and the unity of our great nation you desire to rule?

Tears as corpses of slain ‘corpers’ leave Bauchi -source: Nigerian Tribune

TEARS flowed yesterday as the remains of the nine corps members that were killed in Bauchi State in the post election violence that erupted on April 18 were moved from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) mortuary to their various states of origin for burial. The corpses were evacuated by officials of the National Directorate Headquatres of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Abuja, led by Yakubu Jok, a Deputy Director of the NYSC. The officials arrived at the mortuary around 6 am and waited for the corpses of the fallen heroes to be dressed in their full regalia before the nine ambulances took off. It was an emotional scene that elicited tears from the eyes of those who witnessed the evacuation. The nine corps members were Adewumi Seu (Ekiti), Teidi Olawale Tosin (Kogi), Adowei Elliot (Bayelsa), Okpokiri Obinna (Abia), Gbenjo Ebenezer Aypotunde (Osun), Ukeoma Ikechuwku Chibuzor (Imo), Nwazema Anslem Chukwuonyerem (Imo), Adeniji Kehinde Jehleel (Osun) and Akonyi Ibrahim Sule( Kogi).Seven of themj were killed in Giade Police station where they had ran to for safety, but the rioters overpowered the policemen on duty and killed the corpers with machetes and sticks before setting the station ablaze. Mariah Carey gives birth to twins

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon celebrated their third anniversary with another milestone - becoming parents to a baby girl and boy.
Carey's representative, Cindi Berger, confirmed the births. The singing superstar gave birth on Saturday at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles.
Ms Berger said the baby girl was born first, weighing 5lb 3oz, and was 18 inches (45.7 centimetres) tall; her brother was next, at 5lb 6oz, and was 19 inches (48.3 centimetres).
Ms Berger said the couple had not named the children yet. Cannon drove Carey to the hospital in their Rolls-Royce Phantom. Ms Berger said 41-year-old Carey, who had gone through false labour, was calm, thinking that it was another false alarm.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Cannon was so nervous he went to the wrong department at the hospital, and was guided to the maternity ward by a nurse.
"It was like right out of an 'I Love Lucy' skit," said Ms Berger, referring to the 1950s TV comedy.
Ms Berger said they were listening to Carey's We Belong Together after the children were born.
The couple are expected to renew their wedding vows on Sunday. The pair got married in 2007 after a whirlwind romance.
They were the subject of endless baby rumours, and the couple actually were expecting shortly after their marriage, but Carey had a miscarriage; they did not reveal the miscarriage until she announced her pregnancy last autumn.
As far as more children, Carey recently declared she's done.

Olubayo buried amidst tears -source: Nigerian Punch

Olubayo adefemi
uper Eagles defender Olubayo Adefemi was buried amidst tears on Thursday at the Atan Cemetery, Yaba, Lagos. The late footballer’s fiancĂ©e, Folashade Adeshina, sympathisers, Nigeria Football Federation officials, Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, the team’s goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu, family members and friends of Olubayo were all in tears as the player was laid to rest at Ebony vault of the cemetery.

Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia (centre) goalkeeping coach Ike Shorunmu (left) and NFF member Christopher Green during Olubayo Adefemi’s lying-in-state at the National Stadium, Lagos... on Thursday. Olubayo was buried at Atan Cemetery, Lagos after the ceremony.

The former Skoda Xanthi of Greece right-back died on April 18 on his way to catch a flight to Nigeria to finalise plans for his wedding to Folashade, which was scheduled for May 26.
The 25-year-old player reportedly lost control of his car on the Egnatia motorway before the crash while driving from Xanthi to Salonika in the Kavala region of Greece.
The burial programme of Olubayo commenced with a 30 minutes lying in state at Myhoung Barracks, Yaba, where he grew up.
His remains were moved to the National Stadium, Surulere, for another lying in state around 10.30am before he was taken to Atan Cemetery for burial. A brief service was held for the fallen player before the burial.
Olubayo’s elder brother, Abiodun Adefemi, said Olubayo had brought popularity to the family despite his young age.
Abiodun said mournfully, “He was a great brother; he was not only my brother but my friend. Even though we are from a royal family, the only other reason the family’s name was known worldwide was because of Bayo. We were five but now four.

Ladoja, others blame Obasanjo for PDP’s failure - source: Nigerian Punch

The governorship candidate of the Accord Party in Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, has attributed the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West during the last general elections to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.Ladoja, who was a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees, apportioned the blame in a post-election press conference at his Bodija, Ibadan residence on Thursday.
He said that Obasanjo was the architect of the party’s downfall because he remained an ungrateful man.

Obasanjo, in his reaction to the loss of the state to the opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria, in the governorship election said that the people of the state decided to vote for the ACN and not his candidate, Chief Adetunji Olurin, because of the pervading frustration of the people of the state with the PDP-led government in the last eight years.

Ogboru rejects Delta governorship result -source Next news

The governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Great Ogboru, has rejected the result of the election held in Delta State on Tuesday, saying it was characterised by irregularities.
Addressing a press conference in Asaba yesterday, Mr Ogboru, who spoke through the state DPP chairperson, Tony Ezeagwu, accused the state resident electoral officer, Gabriel Ada, of receiving "gratification." He described the election as "unfortunate."
Mr Ogboru appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the state

According to him, when the election started, the DPP's governorship candidate was winning until the PDP discovered the trend and embarked on fraudulent acts like snatching ballot boxes, mostly in areas the PDP perceived that they wouldn't be getting massive support from the masses.
According to the state DPP boss, voting did not take place in three controversial local government areas in Warri, yet the electoral commission went ahead to declare results from them.
"The INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) resident electoral officer in Delta State has been compromised. Time without number we called for his transfer but Prof Jega wouldn't listen to us because they know what they are benefiting from the state against the wishes of the masses. We know they are always working for the PDP."
Mr Ogboru appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to, as a matter of urgency, intervene to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the state. "Enough is enough," he said. "We will go out to reclaim our mandate."
INEC had declared the incumbent governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan, as the winner of the governorship poll. Announcing the complete results of the April 26 governorship election from the 25 local government areas of the state, the collation and returning officer for the governorship election in the state, Abhulimen Anao, said that the results had been duly authenticated. He therefore declared Mr Uduaghan winner, "having polled the highest number of votes cast in the exercise."
Mr Anao, however, observed that skirmishes in parts of the state prevented polling from holding in some areas, leading to a loss of about 35,000 votes, while invalid votes stood at about 33,000.
Total votes garnered show that Mr Uduaghan secured 525,793 votes against 433,834 votes got by Mr Ogboru, his closest rival.

Election reports from Benin -Polls peaceful in Edo, Oshiomhole, alleges malpractices -source: Nigerian Guardian

ELECTIONS in Edo State yesterday was held in a peaceful atmosphere even though there were pockets of mild violence in some areas, which was quickly brought under control by combined security agencies.
Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State

Also, the House of Representatives polls into Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency was held under a peaceful atmosphere.
In Uneme Nkehua Ward Nine, voting was going on smoothly at the time The Guardian visited the area at about 3 pm.
But in Aiyegunle, Ward seven, the House of Representatives Majority Leader, Tunde Akogun alleged that the election was being skewed in favour of his major opponent, Peter Akpattason of the ACN.
He alleged that some traditional rulers in the area had engaged town criers to publicly announce their endorsement of the ACN candidate.
In Benin City, the state capital, voting went on smoothly without serious challenges.
Accreditation started in some areas in Igarra, Akoko-Edo local council as early as 8 am without any reported hitch.
There was no reported incident in the five councils visited in Edo North where Governor Adams Oshiomhole urged the people to vote and stay behind to defend them..
At  Obe Primary School Fugar, where Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, Mike Ogiadhome voted, the turnout in the area was lower than what was experienced in the presidential election.
He told journalists shortly after casting his vote around 1.34 pm that he was sure that the election would go the way of the previous ones which were relatively peaceful in the area.
But in Ebele, Igueben Local Council, there was a reported case of ballot papers, ballot boxes and voters’ registration stolen by suspected gunmen.
There were also reported cases of skirmishes in Uromi also in Edo Central where the ACN was accused of being instrumental to the violence and attempted rigging in the area.
But the state chairman of the party, Thomas Okosun denied the allegation saying that the party abhorred  violence and rigging and could not  have indulged in such acts.
Meanwhile, Governor Adams Oshiomhole has called on the INEC, to investigate reports of alleged electoral irregularities in some parts of Edo Central.
He stated this shortly after voting at Iyamho Primary School  in  Etsako West Council.
Oshiomhole who arrived the Ward 10, Unit polling centre at about 11:51am  for accreditation cast his vote at about 12:32pm.
Speaking with journalists, the governor said intelligence report indicated that some political thugs invaded Amendokhian, Ward 7, in Esan North East Council, spearheaded by a serving member of the House of Representatives and another incident occurred  at Ekpoma, Esan West Council where soldiers in the area intervened to stop suspected PDP thugs from causing mayhem to pave the way for rigging. He said that he had drawn the attention of the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Rose Obuoforibo to the two incidents.
He said: “I have received two reports now; one is from Hon Itulah’s polling booth, Ward 7, Amendokhian, Uromi, Esan North East. They used their thugs to drive away our people, they carried ballot box and they are thumb printing. I have called the INEC REC to inform her of this development and she has promised she is going to act very swiftly.  In Ekpoma too, the PDP guys also tried to beat up someone, the army intervened and I’m told they have brought the situation there under control. So I imagine that in a couple of places, the PDP people who realised that we have educated our agents to watch out have resorted to driving away our agents and that way they can then have a field day.
“They have already in many cases paid corps members, presiding officers N10,000 so that they can turn the other eye while they want to thumb print, but whenever we have information, we are taking steps to inform the police, and INEC authorities and hoping that they will act on it.  But otherwise in most cases, from what I’m hearing everything appears peaceful.  But you know the real test of election is at the level of counting the vote and collation. I need to get full report on what is happening in Edo South . But in Edo Central, I think they are very determined to rig the election there, but our people are also very well on the alert to watch out.”

governorship and state assembly elections results from other states- live - source Nigerian Thisday

Tuesday’s governorship election would not spring too many surprises as most of the favourites were in comfortable leads.
Going by indications from the early results, THISDAY projects that Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), will be returned as the Governor of Lagos State by a very wide margin.

In Kwara State, the battle in the Saraki family may have ended in favour of the governor, Bukola, as results clearly indicate that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji AbdulFatah Ahmed, won in virtually all the local government areas in the state.
In Ogun State, Mr. Ibikunle Amosun, the ACN candidate, was in comfortable lead, with a very impressive outing across the length and breadth of the state.
Others, who should win their states, by THISDAY projections based on yesterday’s polls, are Alhaji Sule Lamido (Jigawa, PDP), Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe, All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP) and Kashim Shettima (Borno, ANPP).
In Enugu State, Governor Sullivan Chime, the PDP candidate, looked good for a second term.
In Plateau, Jonah Jang (PDP) was leading in 13 local governments, while Pauline Tallen (Labour Party, LP) led in three, namely Wase, Kanam and Jos-North.  Indications are that Jang would be returned.
The results were still being collated as at press time, but THISDAY predicts a very close race in Kano and Katsina States, where the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) seems to be losing its footing despite a strong showing in the presidential election on April 16.
The battle in Kano has suddenly become a straight fight between PDP’s Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and ANPP’s Alhaji Salihu Sagir Taka, after the Court of Appeal declared Col. Jafar Isah as CPC’s candidate, as against the perceived popular choice, Alhaji Mohammed Abacha. Abacha’s supporters are said to have split their votes between ANPP and PDP in protest, but ANPP may win.
In Katsina, the home state of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the CPC presidential candidate, the results seem to favour Alhaji Ibrahim Shema (PDP), perhaps owing to the last-minute change of candidate in the CPC.
Senator Lado Danmarke was displaced as the candidate by former speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, by the Court of Appeal. CPC supporters were said to have been disenchanted with this and might have boycotted or cast their votes for other parties.
The turnout of Lagos State governorship election results from different polling units and wards across the state widely put Fashola ahead of his major opponent, Dr. Adegboyega Shamsuddeen Dosunmu of the PDP.
At Dosunmu’s polling unit in Ojuelegba, Fashola clearly coasted to victory with votes of 156 against Dosunmu’s 90.
The defeat of Dosunmu no doubt is a sharp contrast to the voting pattern during penultimate Saturday’s presidential election, the result of which gave the PDP in Lagos State, generally considered as the stronghold of the ACN.
At his polling unit located at State Junior Secondary School in Itolo area of Surulere, Fashola overwhelmingly won 317 votes compared with meagre votes of 17, which the PDP candidate managed to garner in the area.
Election results from other polling units in Fashola’s Ward G3 showed the incumbent governor winning with an astounding margin.
Also at Alausa Unit 001, which former Lagos State Governor and ACN National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu voted, Fashola successfully polled 303 votes compared with only 34 votes marginally cast for Dosunmu in the same unit.
Results from Alimosho, ACN’s strongest political base, also revealed a massive support for Governor Fashola.
Early results trickling in from some of the local government areas of Enugu State showed that Chime may be coasting home to victory.
But his other two major rivals, Dr Dan Shere of the People for Democratic Change (PDC) and Mr. Okey Ezea of the LP are garnering large chunk of votes.
In a result released by the Presiding Officer in Unadu poling unit in Igboeze South Local Government area, home council of the LP candidate, Chime polled 72 votes to beat Ezea who got 69 votes. Shere came a distant third with two votes.
Also, from Udi, Ezeagu and Oji-River Local Government areas, the governor also defeated his rivals, maintaining a high lead.
In most polling units in the councils, the PDP candidate was leading by 80 per cent against his closest rival, Ezea.
However, in Nkanu West and East, the LP candidate was sweeping the votes.
But, within Enugu metropolis, the PDC candidate trailed behind the governor.
In Ogun State, the governorship and House of Assembly elections went peacefully with large voter turnout.
Results announced at different polling units favoured ACN ahead of PDP and the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN).
In some polling units in Ogun Central, ACN's figures were high compared to those of PDP and PPN. In the Eastern and Western parts of the state, the pattern was similar.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who spoke with newsmen shortly after he cast his vote at the African Church Grammar School in Abeokuta, described the election as the most peaceful in the state.
Obasanjo, who also spoke on the post-election violence in the Northern part of the country, said Nigerians needed to educate themselves.
“We need to educate ourselves and we need to understand what is happening. There are changes taking place in Nigeria and those changes have to be internalised by all of us and we have to adjust to those changes," he said.
On his purported praise singing of the ACN governorship candidate in the state, the former president said those who said he was praising Amosun were mischievous people, saying that "it was deliberate fabrication of lies. All I said was that Amosun and I come from the same ward, Ward 11."
Speaking further, he said: "I said I know Amosun very well and nobody can say I do not know him, and I said from what I know of him, if he ever becomes the governor of Ogun State, his performance will not be different from that of Gbenga Daniel."
He continued: "They are friends and they are birds of the same feather. That was what I said and I do not see how that can mean that I endorsed Amosun. How can I? The chairman of Board of Trustees of a party? When the candidate of my party is contesting, and I will leave the candidate of my party to endorse the candidate of another party, and which party for that matter? And those who heard that should know that that is not my character.”
However, Amosun, who also addressed newsmen after casting his vote at Totoro polling unit area of the state, said: "I am very happy that the presiding officers came on time today. It has not been happening like that in the past. They have been there very early today and that has helped to make the process of accreditation much easier."
According to him, "I believe that Nigeria is at the verge of making history in the area of conducting free and fair elections," adding that "the only regret is that this morning in this area we caught somebody in this area who has been going about with mobile police."
"This does not say anything good about the opposition who have been trying to use armed policemen to intimidate voters. Anyway, we are investigating that. Outside of this, I am quite satisfied with the process. I discovered that Nigerians are now determined to ensure that their votes count," he added.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, Chief Adetunji Olurin, who also spoke with newsmen in Ilaro, described the turnout as impressive, saying that his party was sure of victory.
However, PPN governorship candidate, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, described the process as being fair enough to pass the test of free and fair election, saying, "from what we saw in the last two elections and even with this one that we had today, (yesterday), I think democracy is really improving in Nigeria and the people are responding also fairly well. So we expect that the result of the election will be fairly good at least from what we have seen so far."

Low voter turn out, violence mar polls, Akala, Shema struggling, Akpabio, Amaechi, Aliyu leading

GOVERNORS Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, and Sullivan Chime of Enugu State were in early lead, yesterday, based on results emerging from their states in the nationwide gubernatorial and state constituency elections. Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN gubernatorial candidate was also heading to victory in Ogun State.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was, however, pressing ahead despite stiff challenges in Benue in the elections that were characterized by violence and irregularities.
In Delta State, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of the PDP and Chief Great Ogboru, the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, gubernatorial candidate were running neck and neck in the early results available with Dr Uduaghan having a slight lead. Uduaghan was reportedly leading in the two Isoko local government areas, Sapele and Ethiope West while Ogboru was leading in most of the Central local governenment areas and slightly in Patani Local Government Areas. Results from Warri were yet to come in.
While Ogboru was reported to be leading in Delta Central Senatorial district, the two candidates were in hot pursuit for the votes in Delta North.
PDP was also facing strong challenges in Imo. The PDP was also showing strength in Kano State where its candidate, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwanso, was running neck and neck with the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP’s Salihu Sagir Takir last night.
Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate was in a tough battle last night with his Congress for Progressive Change rival, Aminu Bello Masari making early leads in first returns from Katsina Central and Katsina North.
PDP’s strong challenge in Lagos
The PDP’s strong challenge for Lagos was, however, believed to have lost steam as first results from the voting showed heavy support for the incumbent Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, candidate, Babatunde Fashola.
PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in Lagos, Dr. Ade Dosunmu lost his polling unit, F1 Unit 018 at Tejuosho scoring 75 votes to the 175 scored by Fashola.
The party’s malaise was also visible in neighbouring Ogun State where former President Olusegun Obasanjo lost in his polling booth while the ACN’s state leader, former Governor Segun Osoba easily pulled victory for his party’s candidate, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Amosun was heading to victory last night with clear leads in Ogun Central and Ogun East Senatorial districts. He was also reported to be doing very well in Ogun West, the stronghold of his two major rivals in the PDP and Peoples Party of Nigeria, PPN. Olumide Osoba, son of former Governor Osoba was also reported to have won his bid for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent Owode Federal Constituency.
Akala sweeps votes in Ogbomosho
Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, the PDP gubernatorial candidate was reported to have swept the votes in the Ogbomosho area of Oyo State but trailing in Ibadan area as at press time.
PDP was, however, fighting back in Ondo State with its heavyweights aiming to mitigate recent losses suffered in the National Assembly elections.
While Governor Segun Mimiko ably pulled victory for his Labour Party in his Iodasa Ward 7 unit 20 with 234 votes to 15 scored by the PDP, Senator Bode Olajumoke was able to deliver his ward 6 in Imeri for the PDP. In Ondo State, where there was no gubernatorial election, the Labour Party was reported to have won 25 of the 26 State constituency results declared. The result for Ese Odo was stil. being expected at press time.
The PDP polled 666 votes in Olajumoke’s ward 6 to the 352 votes scored for the Labour Party. Defence Minister Tokunbo Kayode was also able to win in Ward 2 Ikaramu in Akoko North West for the PDP.
First results released from a few polling units in Owerri Municipal in Imo State showed good wins for the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA. It was learnt that PDP was banking on votes from outside Owerri senatorial zone. Governor Ikedi Ohakim and Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Goodluck Opiah, were reported to have won in their polling units.
In Kwara State, prospects of Second Republic Senate Leader, Senator Olusola Saraki positioning his daughter to replace his son as governor of the state were fading as initial reports showed her trailing even in her own polling booth while all other major gubernatorial candidates won the votes in their polling units.
Senator Gbemisola Saraki of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, was third in her Opobiyi, Agbaji ward. She trailed the PDP which came first and the ACN second.
The gubernatorial candidate for Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Alhaji Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq polled 229, followed by PDP 194, then ACPN 74 and ACN 63 at his polling centre in Idi-gba.
Democratic Peoples Party, DPP’s gubernatorial candidate, Gbenga Olawepo, easily dominated the voting in his St Paul Anglican polling centre, in Agbamu, Irepodun LGA of the state. He scored 217 votes compared to the 96 scored by the PDP, 40 for ACN and two for CPC.
There was a deviation from the general apathy that characterized the voting across the country in Zamfara State. As late as 8.30 p.m. yesterday voting was still ongoing in several sections of Zamfara State.
In Adamawa State where there was no gubernatorial election, the PDP was reported to have swept the votes in all but two local government areas in the contest for the House of Assembly.
Reports reaching Vanguard last night indicated that Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, swept the polls in the three senatorial zones of the state. In his Enugu West Zone comprising Udi, Ezeagu, Oji River, Awgu and Aninri LGAs, it was a landslide victory for the governor as majority of the voters went for the PDP in demonstration of their determination to retain the governorship seat in the zone.
The people of Enugu North (Nsukka zone) from where two major opponents of the governor, Dr. Dan Shere of People for Democratic Change, PDC, and Chief Okey Ezea of Labour Party, emerged also voted massively for Chime.
Although the two opposition candidates got appreciable votes within their immediate political environment, the PDP was clearly in the lead going by polling booth results declared yesterday.
On the other hand, the Enugu East Zone (Nkanu land) where the leader of PDC and former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani hails also gave Chime large votes.
PDP leaders like Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, Chief Jim Nwobodo, Chief Ken Nnamani, Senator Ayogu Eze, the state PDP Chairman, Engr. Vita Abba and a governorship aspirant, Chief Anayo Onwuegbu, all delivered their wards to the ruling party.
Major political appoinJonah Jang voted as his accreditation was delayed because he forgot his voter’s card at home. One of his aides had to rush back to his residence to pick the card before he eventually did his accreditation and voted around 12.35.pm.
There were various versions on the cause of the fracas in Nasarawa area. While a version said trouble started when some strange people invaded a polling unit but were resisted by voters in the area, another said a party agent was molested
In Akwa Ibom State, the PDP candidate Chief Godswill Akpabio was understood to have won in 28 of the 31 local government areas where results were collated. His major opponent, Senator Akpan Udoedehe won in Uyo.
Reports from Minna, Niger State, last night also indicated that the state governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, was coasting home to victory as most of the results already declared showed that he had majority of the votes cast.
Expression of delight
In Jos, the Plateau State Governor Jonath Jang, expressed delight with the generally peaceful nature of the exercise and commended security agencies for promptly bringing minor security challenges in some parts under control.
The state Deputy Governor, Dame Pauline Tallen who is the Labour Party governorship candidate who voted at the Shendam B ward, was happy with the large turn out of voters which she said was an indication that people were out to effect change.
Similarly, governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Chris Giwa who voted at Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area who noted that voter turn out was bigger than the previous elections said this was indicative of the people’s desire to vote a governor of their choice.
Gunmen hijack voting materials
Gunmen hijacked electoral materials at Egwede and Ogbarude in Ndokwa East local government area in Delta State and took them to the bush for thumb-printing.
At polling unit 1, Aliheme in Ika South local government area, it was also reported that thugs snatched ballot materials and took away to a hideout for thumb printing.
Some of those who spoke to Vanguard on the development were shocked that the police could not stop the ballot thieves.
However, the INEC Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Ada said those who hijacked electoral materials for thumb printing were wasting their time for such votes would not count.
The police recovered three bombs yesterday near the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, offices at Burutu and Ogbe-Ijoh in Delta State.
Vanguard learnt the bombs were planted by militants who wanted to stop the declaration of results from the local governments, considered to be strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Delta state police spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka told Vanguard that policemen also recovered an AK 47 rifle at Sapele.
Two of the bombs were found at Burutu while one was recovered at Ogbe-Ijoh.
In Taraba State low turn especially in urban and semi urban areas of the state yesterday characrterised the governorship and house of Assembly elections while there was a large turn out in rural areas in an exercise that was largely violence free and peaceful.
While in some polling units within Wukari metropolis in the southern part of the state witnessed simultaneous accreditation and voting, prompt report by Vanguard to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission halted the practice which is against the Electoral Act.
Turn out in Jalingo, Taraba State was lower than in the two previous elections in what observers blamed on voter fatigue and the outcome of the two elections which were won by the Peoples Democratic Party.
In at least two polling units in Wukari, voting and Accreditation of voters were going on simultaneously in contravention of the Electoral Act which stipulates that voting would commence after 12 o’clock when the accreditation of voters which commenced 8am had been completed.
A member of the NYSC at one of the polling stations where under-aged voting was taking place told Vanguard: “It is not my responsibility to stop anybody whose name is on the register to vote” while a policeman at the polling station merely shrugged his shoulder in a helpless gesture when asked why he did not stop the under aged voters from voting

Another bomb blasts occurred this morning at three different locations in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. The explosions our correspondent gathered, took place in Baga Road ,  London Ciki and Jejeri ward at about 6 am in the metropolis.
This is coming barely 24 hours after a 3 Bomb blasts occurred at Tudu in Maduganari ward, Tashan Kano Motorpark and Kasuwan Shanu killing three people and seriously injuring 14.
The bomb which was thrown in Jejeri our correspondent learnt, did not kill nor injure anybody as it landed on a grave yard before it exploded.
It was not clear whether those who perpetrated the act are members of the deadly Boko Haram, even as the sect members had in a day to the elections posted a threatened letter on the their website that, the strike continues.

Nigerian star killed in car accident - The Sun (UK)

Olubayo Adefemi

NIGERIAN international Olubayo Adefemi has died in a car accident.

The 25-year-old Skoda Xanthi defender lost control of his vehicle on the Egnatia motorway while driving to Salonika in northern Greece.
Police said the former Rapid Bucharest player was on his way to finalise details of his wedding when the accident happened.
Adefemi joined Xanthi last summer and made 24 appearances for the club, scoring two goals. He was also capped three times by Nigeria.
A statement from the Greek football federation read: "The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi, who died tragically in a car accident." May his soul rest in perfect peace.

On killed, churches, shops razed as youths protest in Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno Kano, Kaduna -source Nigeria Vanguard

FEW hours to announce the results of the presidential elections that took place last Saturday all over the 36 states of the federation, there were massive protests in some parts of the Northern states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno Kano, Kaduna and Yobe state alleging that the ruling Peoples Democratic party (PDP) had connived with INEC and other security agencies to rig, manipulate and influence the outcome of the results at the detriment of the Congress for ProgressAive Change and other opposition parties. In Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, our correspondent reports that, there was a heavy protest by some aggrieved youth believed to be pro-Buhari who was the presidential Candidate of the CPC.
The protest started in Potiskum town at about 10 0clock in the morning perpetrated by youth who barricade major highways leading to Potiskum- Kano and Bauchi roads burning tyres which led to the killing of one person and many people wounded in the process.
It was also gathered that two churches including the First Baptist Church and 6 shops belonging to non indigenes were burnt down to ashes by the angry youths who had besieged all nooks and crannies of Potiskum.
The rampaging youths alleged that Governor of Adamawa, Murtala Nyako, Bauchi, Isa Yuguda, Jigawa, Sule Lamido among other northern governors connived to rig the election against General Buhari.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Commisioner Mr. David Omojola told newsmen that a detached team of Policemen and soldiers have been drafted to douse tension in the area, while he warned anybody found wanting will be severely dealt with.
He therefore calls on the general public not to panic, but to remain calm as security operatives are on top of the situation.
Likewise, in Borno state, there was peaceful demonstration in popular places such as the post office area which is situated in the heart of Maiduguri, the state capital, Gomari Airports, Gwange, Bolori wards within the metropolis.
The demonstration which was spearheaded by youths who are pro-Buhari were also burning tyres around some Junctions but with the quick intervention of the security operatives a.k.a Operation Flush II, there was no one injured and no property was destroyed.
As at the time of filling in this report, the city is calm as people are seeing doing their own businesses without chaos.

Two major cities are engulfed in post election rioting arising from the announcement of presidential election results  by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that favored president Goodluck Jonathan to win the elections after polling 22 million votes to defeat his closest rival, Muhammad Buhari.
Reports from Kaduna, Kano and Zaria show massive rioting as supporters of the Congress of Progressive Change began mobilizing against the outome of the elections.

There have also been reports of rioting in Zaria. The crisis started yesterday with violence  reported in the northern Nigeria states of Gombe, Sokoto and Adamawa.

Escalating Post Election Rioting Targets Northern Traditional Rulers And Politicians - source:sahara reporters

The post election crisis in the northern parts of Nigeria has not only escalated, but also spread to parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with two people reported to have died in Kano.
Disgruntled rioters in Kano embarked on an arson campaign, burning the houses of the Galadima of Kano, the palace of the Emir of Kano, as well as homes belonging to the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na Abba.  Two of the former Speaker's aides are said to have been lost to rampaging supporters of Muhammadu Buhari's Congress for Progressive Change.
