An advocacy group, Women Against Rape, Sexual Harassment and Sexual Exploitation, has charged Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers to prosecute the Alowa of Ilowa, Oba Bukola Alli, over alleged case of rape.
A National Youth Service Corps member (name withheld), recently alleged that the traditional ruler raped her, provoking public outrage with many calling for the monarch’s removal.
A statement by WARSHE, run by female intellectuals in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said on Wednesday that the allegation by the female corps member must be thoroughly investigated.
The statement signed by the group’s coordinator, Dr. Olutoyin Mejiuni, reads, “We implore the government of Osun State, led by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to take appropriate action in this case.
“We know that the judiciary will determine an appropriate jail term, but of course, a jail term will take away the offence to the Yoruba sense of the sacrilege.
“Clearly, the Alowa behaved far less than royal when he left his domain to rape a young woman in Osogbo. So, the government should keep him away from his domain permanently, even after his jail term.
“We expect that the Osun traditional rulers’ council will not fail to hand the Alowa the sanctions that are appropriate to the sacrilege he committed on Yoruba soil.”
Commending the raped corps member for her courage and determination to get justice, WARSHE said that it was unfortunate that female corps members had become objects of rape and abuse by some leaders of the Nigerian society.
The statement said that the incidence of rape against female corps members had been on the rise because “some Nigerian leaders believe that corps members were part of the national cake to be shared and despoiled.”
