A group of political hoodlums on Saturday night killed one of the party agents of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Tajudeen Balogun.
Balogun, our correspondent gathered, had gone to submit the result of the election at Ward 4 at St. Mary Primary School polling unit in Abeokuta when he was shot dead by the political thugs, who were believed to be members of the opposition.
The thugs were said to be aggrieved by the outcome of the poll.
The governorship candidate of the ACN in Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the chairman of the party, Alhaji Tajudeen Bello, in separate interviews on Sunday, condemned the killing of the party agent.
Amosun said, “It is unfortunate that the opposition tried as much as possible to overturn the outcome of the election. One of our party agents was killed in the process and I almost lost my life too but we thank God that this was impossible for them.
“You can also see the attempt they made at gaining access to the venue of the collation centre at Ake Centenary Hall; it shows the level of desperation of corrupt politicians.”
Bello decried what he described as growing cases of political violence in the nation’s politics.
In a related development, a group of political thugs invaded the Ogun Central Collation Centre at Centenary Hall in Ake on Saturday night and opened fire on the building in an attempt to scare away the INEC officials collating the results at the centre.
It took the intervention of the security men, who also opened fire to repel the hoodlums and prevent them from gaining entry into the collation centre.
Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums arrived at the collation centre at about 9.30pm and tampered with the transformer of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, thereby putting the collation centre and the entire area into total darkness.
Following a distress call, a team of soldiers was deployed to the area to stop the activities of the hoodlums.
